Psychology Club Meeting Minutes9.27.09

The meeting started at 1pm
Present at the meeting: Tom B., Tom, Courtney, Jenna, Martha, Steve, Malerie, Sera, Jolie and a guest speaker from the Crisis Unit, Mary Marana.

Mary Marana from the Crisis Line talked about how they need volunteers and what they do to help our community. They volunteer in 6 counties. The shift that you take will work with your schedule. There are three five hour shirts and one 9 hour shift. It is confidential and anonymous. You can take your shift on your cell phone. 95-98% of volunteers help with the calls they receive. Year to date they have had 400 calls. There is a 6 month commitment and minimum of 2 shifts in a month. There are three mandatory meetings; one in April for volunteer appreciation month, August where they have a picnic and December for a Christmas party. Helping with the Crisis unit looks good on your resume and is a rewarding feeling.

PTSD speaker questions: the club is going to hand out index cards to write a question down. There will be two ushers, Sera and Jolie who will ask the question on the index cards and will be there to hand the microphone to anyone who wants to ask the question themselves.  (Kind of like old fashion Oprah style) J

Steve is looking into getting signs for directions in the college so people who are not familiar with the layout of the college will be able to find the Chalberg with ease.

FYI: Even if you are not active in the club meetings– please plan on attending the speaker. This is important and how this turns out will reflect on our club.  We need the encouragement and support from all of the psychology members!!!
If you have any psych apparel November 3rd would be the day to wear it!

Everyone is working together to hand out signs to the community and the college! Thanks!!

December 9th, 10am to 2pm is our set date for Stress Management Day.

Steve talked about volunteer opportunities at the Good Samaritan and the soup kitchen.

Next meeting: November 17, 2009

Upcoming Events!

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Presentation - Thursday, April 30, Chalberg Theater, Noon

Stress Management Day is May 4

Final Meeting of the year:  May 7

Psychology Club minutes for February 26th, 2009

The college President Dr. Larry Lundblad came to the meeting to see what our club was about.

Angie set up the Camp Knutson volunteering opportunity for the Fall of 2009. Thanks Angie!

Lutheran Social Services is looking for Youth Mentors to volunteer to work with youth in our communities.  Please see Martha for the contact information.

Kelly is looking into the volunteering opportunity with the VA Center at CLC.  Charity Spoke with Noah (VA Club President) and he said there are opportunities for volunteering with families of deployed troops in the area.  We will be talking about what Kelly finds out at our next meeting so we can set up a volunteering opportunity if there is enough interest.

Earth Day volunteering was brought to the table.  Suggestion is that the Psychology Club may want to make signs for the Green Club to use.  It is suggested that we save our cardboard to make signs.  We can discuss if there is interest in this activity at the next meeting.

We will be interviewing elders from one of the local nursing homes in the near future.  Please volunteer if you would be interested in this project.  We will be setting a date at our next meeting.

We will be taking a poll on interest in volunteering at the soup kitchen again soon.  This was a very fun worthwhile opportunity for our club to be a part of.

Thanks to everyone who ordered a Psychology Club Jacket and got their receipt in on time.  Sera will have an idea of when they will be ready at our next meeting.

Angie suggested making signs for the pancake breakfast  to hang off of our pre-existing signs around campus.

Pancake breakfast fundraiser is March 25th from 7 am to 10 am.  Food to be served from 7:30 to 9:30 am.  This will raise money for the speaker on FAS in April.  We will need everyone to let us know if they will be available for this breakfast so we can make a schedule of who will work and when.

We will also be handing out tickets to be pre-sold for the breakfast at our next meeting.  Pre-selling will increase our attendance #’s for the breakfast.  We have to guarantee 80 plates be sold so either way we have to pay for 80 plates.  This could be a wonderful opportunity to make money if we all pitch in and sell as many tickets as possible.  Some of the money may be donated to a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Charity of our choice.

Martha volunteered to email all faculty and ask that they give their students extra credit for attending our FAS speaker.  JD suggested that we have the speaker in the cafeteria at noon as this will help increase attendance from people who are there to eat.

Next meeting is set for March 12th in the Fireside Lounge.  We will be serving pizza.

Thank you!  Psychology Club

Psychology Club Meeting notes for 2-12-09

Jesse and Sera brought notes from the Student Senate meeting.  Key topics were:

February 17th and 18th Locks for Love: $15.00 per person, must be able to cut 6-8 inches of hair off.  Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

February 20th at Washington Middle School there will be 9 legislators discussing the college budget (higher tuition, costs of books, etc) Please come to ask questions that will affect most of us.  It would be nice to have a few people in our Club represent us at this discussion.  Please email psychologyclub@live.com if you are interested in representing us at this discussion.

February 24th at 5-7 PM at the Business and Industry Center there will be a forum to discuss the college Drive road construction project.

March 3rd at 12 noon Rosenmeier/senate forum will be discussing the cost of higher education.

March 3rd There will be a blood drive at the college.  There is a contest among clubs to see who can get the highest percentage of their members to either donate or attempt to donate for the cause.  We would like to win this as there is a pizza party for top prize.  Please mark this on your calendars and remember this could someday help someone you love or even you!  This is a wonderful way to make a difference.

April 22nd is Earth day!  Sera brought up the possibility of having a booth for this day.  Any ideas or club members  wanting to volunteer to help set up or run this booth please email psychologyclub@live.com or bring your ideas to the next meeting.

Angie heard back from Camp Knutson and they are already full for volunteers this spring so, Angie is going to set up for the Psychology Club to volunteer there in the fall of ’09.  Thanks Angie!

Jesse and Angie are trying to find a mental health professional that is willing to speak about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.  It was felt that this would be a good topic for a college as there can be a lot of alcohol abuse and unprotected sexual activity resulting in pregnancy.  We are going to try to set up this discussion so it can be open to the public also and be held the Week of April 9th.  There was also discussion of asking the teaching staff to give their students extra credit for going to the discussion and the possibility of serving food after the presentation.

We also set up a time with Kevin Stumpf with the cafeteria to have a breakfast fundraiser.  The date will be March 25th from 7 am to 9 am.  We will be serving French toast, sausage, tator rounds, OJ and coffee.  Suggested cost was $5.00 or $5.50 per plate.  Kevin cooks everything and we are responsible to serve and do clean up.  Kevin also suggested that we come to the breakfast that the Law Enforcement club is having on February 25th to see how it is done and how their turn out is.  The money from this fund raiser will go directly to the fund for the speaker.

Jacket orders began today.  Contact psychologyclub@live.com with your orders by February 26th.  You will need to pay $15 to the business office by February 26th and get the receipt to either Sera or Martha.  Martha graciously volunteered to accept the receipts vial her mailbox at the college if you cannot get them to her or Sera in person.  Thank you Martha.  JUST SO THERE IS NO MISCOMMUNICATION JACKET ORDER MUST BE MADE AND PAID FOR BY FEBRUARY 26TH.  NO EXCEPTIONS.  NO RECEIPT MEANS NO ORDER.  This will help alleviate false orders being placed and the Psychology Club fund having to pick up the tab.  Thank you for understanding!

Reminder of Stress Management Day being the week of May 4-9th.  Please bring ideas to the next meeting for our booth theme.  Thanks!

The next Psychology Club meeting is February 26th at 12 noon in the Fireside Lounge!  We hope to see you there!  And as always Bring a friend!   Thanks Charity

There has been a Facebook group started for the club.  Emails have been sent out to Psychology Club members or potential members who have not joined the group yet.  We will be using this group to keep in contact between meetings and hold discussions on topics that need decisions made between meeting times.  Please try to check out the group and feel free to ask for assistance if you do not have a Facebook account in place and someone can help you, or go to www.facebook.com to register.

There is also an email address for the CLC Psychology Club.  Please add it to your address book as this is the address that you will receive the meeting minutes from.  psychologyclub@live.com

The group discussed doing a volunteer activity in the community at least once per month as a Club.  There is a discussion in the facebook group asking when members are most available for these activities.

Some ideas for volunteering that are being researched are:

Mounted Eagles- Mounted Eagles enhances the lives of program participants, volunteers and the community by providing a safe and enjoyable environment where individuals with special needs benefit from therapeutic, developmental and educational equine-assisted activities.

Women’s Shelter (women members only)-

Family members of deployed service members- Kelly is getting more info on this for us.

Sharing Bread Soup Kitchen- We exist to feed the hungry and serve meals to all who come.

Northland Arboretum- We are a non-profit organization dedicated to getting the community involved in and aware of nature.

Northern Pines food shelf – possibly doing a food drive for them.

Founded in 1979, NAMI has affiliates in every state and in more than 1,100 local communities across the country.

Drug Corps

Camp Confidence- A year round Outdoor education & recreation center for persons of all ages with Developmental Disabilities.

Camp Knutson- A summer camp for children with skin disease, autism, down syndrome, heart diseases, and Families affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS members.

Nursing Homes

Discussion about having a raffle with large or small prizes with proceeds going to one of our volunteer activities.  We will discuss more about this on the facebook group and at future meetings.

Would we like to do a speaker activity for the college?  Possibly could have one of the school counselors talk about career avenues for after CLC graduation.

Jackets were presented for ordering.  They will be fleece zip up jackets with embroidered logos on the front and the back.  They will be black with red embroidery.  Cost will be dependent on the # being ordered.  Orders will be taken on February 12th,2009 and payment will be due by February 26th, 2009.  The order will be placed February 27th, 2009.

Student Senate meetings are held on Wednesdays from 12:00 noon to 12:50 PM in room C223 which is located next to the Veteran’s Center.  At least one member must be present.  Currently Niki, Sera and Jesse have volunteered to attend the meetings.  If anyone else is interested in helping with this you can send an email to the psychology club email address listed above.

Psychology Club will be having Stress Management Day again in May.  Please let us know your ideas.  Some suggestions were to have more candy, have a Wheel game or some other game for students to play.

Jesse and Niki are making signs for our club meetings.  We will now have signs that stay up all semester with all the meeting dates on the signs.  We are doing our part to save a tree!  Great idea Jesse!

Next Psychology Club meeting is Thursday February 12, 2009 at 12:00 noon in the Fireside Lounge.  Recruit! Recruit! Recruit!  Let’s make this the most productive semester ever!
