At the water garden ponds on the south side of campus,  James Kope of Brainerd practiced with a digital camera provided by Steve Kohls during that session. The subjects were participants in the natural resources session, who were gathering pond samples fore closer examination in the NR lab.
Forty-seven youths in grades 5-9 attended.
The event provided an introduction to some of the programs and services offered at the community and technical college. These include digital color photography, music, floriculture, geography, writing, natural resources, health, heavy equipment operation, American Sign Language, and career planning.

EZ-Phil&StudentEZ-DanaGoadAnother big day at EZ Enrollment
The July 23 EZ Enrollment Day at the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College brought in dozens of new students to register for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 25. CLC employees Phil Olson and Dana Goad helped the enrollees through the process. A total of 141 students registered. There were two full assessment rooms and a computer commons busy with students attempting to find open sections of classes to take. EZ Enrollment Day is the most efficient way for many new students to complete the enrollment process with ample opportunity to receive assistance from staff and -- after a few hours -- leave the campus with your fall schedule in hand.

The next EZ Enrollment Days:

HOGriderH.O.G. riders get rider training
Motorcycle and motor scooter riders of all ages and levels of experience have been flocking to the training classes offered through the Central Lakes College customized training department.
In classes held at convenient times, riders are taught essential skills for safe motoring. Riders age 18 and up can earn their motorcycle license by successfully completing the basic course.
On a recent afternoon at the Findorff Athletic Complex parking lot members of the Lake Country Hog Harley Riders group received five hours of experienced rider instruction from Jay Bock of CLC, one of the state's 190 certified trainers, or coaches. While motorcycles are provided at no charge for the regular basic and experienced rider training, the Harley owners operated their own sweet wheels.
Bob Hanson, rider training coordinator at CLC, said that since the college joined the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Program in 2004, about 1,100 riders have been trained locally.

CLC to receive MJSP grant to assist Riverwood

CLC will partner with Itasca Community College, Grand Rapids, and Riverwood to deliver the training. A grant-signing ceremony will be held July 31 at the facility in Aitkin.

College, county health work to improve dental health of Crow Wing children
The Crow Wing County Health Department and Central Lakes College are collaborating to improve the dental health of young children, ages 6 months to 16 years, in Crow Wing County.
At Sunny Smile Days children will receive dental varnishing, which is a fluoride treatment, from CLC dental assisting students who are donating their time and skill.
Dental varnish is a protective coating of fluoride that is painted on the teeth to prevent cavities and to help stop cavities that may have already started forming.
In addition to the fluoride treatment, CLC students are donating their time to provide oral hygiene education to the child and his or her parents.

Central Lakes College hosted a free children's dental varnishing day recently in the Brainerd campus dental clinic, where  Haydon Giger, 5, of Merrifield demonstrated proper brushing he learned from CLC student Amber Ruschen of Crosby.

The dental clinics are open the second Wednesday and fourth Friday in July and August. The remaining dates are Aug. 13 and 22 at the Crow Wing County Health Department, 204 Laurel Street Suite #12, Brainerd..
Appointments are required and can be made by contacting Shari Nelson at 824‑1097.  Each appointment will last approximately 20 minutes and will be scheduled between 9 a.m. and noon and 1-4 p.m.

KarlaCarlson&Rattler
NR grad works for US Forest Service
CLC spring graduate Karla Carlson of Bloomington has been out in California fighting those fires and killing rattle snakes at the same time.
She returned in mid-July only to learn that the U.S. Forest Service would be sending her out again.  She has been based at the regional Forest Service in Walker and received extensive training to combat the California fires.  Now she is in the middle of it all and having a great time, reports Gary Carson, NR instructor.
"She said it is like being in an action adventure movie with airplanes dropping retardant, helicopters bringing and taking firefighters to different areas - lots of fire. lots of smoke, and lots of action and long days," Gary said.
Karla had been working with an engine crew, so Karla was directly on the fire.   When she goes back she will be with a hand crew doing mop-up - going through where the fire has already been and putting out hotspots.
