Academic Centers for Enrichment
The Academic Centers for Enrichment (ACE)
located in the East Wing on the Brainerd Campus and just off the Student Commons Cafeteria
area on the Staples Campus, help prepare students for achievement in college classes. The
services coordinated through this area are:
Transition Services:
This service consists of team planning which takes place prior to the student
entering post-secondary education, entering employment, or transferring to a four-year
institution. Accommodations needed by students will be in place before the student
participates in one of these activities.
Assessment and Accommodations:
The Academic Center for Enrichment works closely with the Counseling Departments
and the Assessment Departments in interpretations of the entrance assessment and other
assessments for students and staff. This department gives, or coordinates the giving of,
additional assessments for students if these assessments aid in the creating of a student
plan. The obtaining of IEPs and Care Agency records of students with disabilities is also
coordinated through this department.
Testing under the ACE is not done to screen
applicants for programs but to determine a students college readiness level and a
student's supportive needs while attending Central Lakes College. All assessment
information is confidential and is kept in the student's permanent file. Only professional
staff who have a need to know will have access to the information.
Referral Services:
While many supports are provided within the ACE Department, there will be referrals
for services, both in-house and in the community, that this department does not provide.
Some of these services could include services provided by DRS, CEP, Social Services, or
the Central Lakes College Counseling Department, etc. Students will be referred if these
types of supports are needed.
Environmental Modifications:
This service is accomplished by changing the environment in a classroom/lab area to
better accommodate students with disabilities.
Computer Assisted Instruction:
Interactive computer stations and programs are available within the ACE Department
to support classroom activities for students from various disciplines.
Case Management:
This service is instrumental in monitoring the progress of a student as he/she
moves through the college system. On-campus counselors, advisors, and care agency
personnel are involved with the ACE staff in providing this service.
Alternative Learning Adaptation:
Our staff coordinates the plan that offers this type of service which provides
learning in different modes for students with disabilities.
Study Group Facilitation:
Study groups for students will be coordinated through the staff in this department.
Study groups could be set up in the following ways:
a. Facilitated - A staff person facilitates
the group.
b. Non-Facilitated - A study group of students.
c. Brown-Bag Workshops - Workshops set-up by staff for students that enhance the
quality of life.
d. Supplemental Instruction - Academic assistance program which supports
high-risk classes by pro-viding regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated study
sessions.
Tutoring Services:
A major portion of the ACE program revolves around the tutoring services. Students
are tutored for a number of reasons. Tutoring is done to enhance a student's understanding
of academic course content and lab course content. It can be accomplished in small group,
classroom, lab, or individual settings. Instructors, Technical Tutors, or Peer Tutors
provide these services.
English As A Second Language Services:
This assistance is given a student whose primary language is other than English and
who may have difficulty reading, writing, speaking, and understanding classroom
instruction in the English language.
Notetaking Services:
This service secures notetakers for students who have documented reasons why they
cannot take their own notes in CLC classes.
Reader Services - Text Book Taping
Service:
This is a service available to students who have a documented disability stating
that their reading level is below a designated level.
Test Taking Accommodations:
A service for students who have documented reasons stating they have problems in
testing situations.
Services for Students With Disabilities:
The Policy for students with Disabilities at Central Lakes College ensures the
provisions of the Academic Center for Enrichment to meet reasonable needs of all qualified
enrolled or admitted students with disabilities. A coordinator for Disability Services is a part
of, and is located in, the ACE on each campus to assist students with reasonable
accommodations. Students with disabilities should promptly initiate requests for services
or accommodations prior to their entering the college.
